Frequently asked questions

Is Squish free to use?

Yes — Squish is completely free, with no sign-up, no account, and no limits on how many images you convert.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. All conversion happens locally in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images never leave your device, which makes Squish fully private and safe for confidential or personal photos.

What's the difference between WebP and AVIF?

Both are modern formats that produce much smaller files than PNG or JPG. WebP is supported in virtually every current browser and is a safe default. AVIF usually compresses even better at the same quality but is slower to encode and supported in fewer browsers. Squish detects what your browser supports and tells you on the settings bar.

Which formats can I convert?

You can convert PNG, JPG/JPEG and GIF images into WebP or AVIF. Add files by dragging and dropping, pasting from the clipboard, or browsing — and convert many at once.

Does converting remove image metadata?

Yes. Re-encoding through the canvas strips EXIF and GPS metadata, so location and camera details are removed from the output files.

Does it work offline?

Yes. After your first visit, Squish is cached on your device and continues to work without an internet connection. You can even install it as an app from your browser's menu.
